Chrysler

Chrysler was formed by Walter P. Chrysler on June 6, 1925. The railroad engineer had joined the ailing Maxwell Motor Corporation a few years earlier to help turn around its struggling operations. He then reorganized the company and renamed it Chrysler Corporation, with the head office in Michigan. However, the first car with the Chrysler badge was made in 1924, a year before the company was officially incorporated. Named the Chrysler 70, this car was a massive success in the market, offering innovative features unavailable in other vehicles at the time. In 1928, Chrysler decided to restructure the company, creating two separate brands, Plymouth for budget vehicles and Desoto for mid-price vehicles. Soon after, Chrysler acquired the Dodge Brothers Company and went on to become one of America’s biggest automakers.

Dodge

Brothers Horace and John Dodge founded the Dodge brand in 1900. Started as a mechanic shop, the company soon began to produce parts and assemblies for US automobile manufacturers. In 1914, they rolled out their first vehicle, the Dodge 30-35 – the world’s first all-steel car that sold over 45,000 in the first year. Dodge then expanded its product line, introducing iconic models like the Durango and Hornet SUVs. The company also manufactured vehicles for the American army during WWII. In 1920, Dodge was sold to an investment bank, Dillon, Read & Co., which sold it to Chrysler in 1928.

Jeep

The Jeep’s story traces back to 1941 when the US military contracted Willys-Overland Motor Company to produce rugged vehicles for the army. The result was the Willys MA and MB models, used by the Allied forces during WWII. Jeep introduced civilian versions after the war, quickly becoming popular due to their unmatched off-road prowess and versatility. In 1953, the company was sold to Henry Kaiser, who later sold it to American Motors Corporation in 1970. In 1987, Chrysler Corporation acquired American Motors Corporation, and Jeep became a part of Chrysler.
