The Evolution of Our RAM Trucks

The History of the RAM Brand.

The story of the RAM brand began in the early 20th century. The original company, the Dodge Brothers, was founded in 1900, specializing in manufacturing engines and chassis components. In 1914, Dodge started producing trucks for the US military. These trucks quickly became popular due to their immense strength and capability.
In 1981, Dodge decided to change the names of their trucks from the Dodge D-Series to the Dodge RAM.

RAM Trucks: from 1981 to the Present Day

First Generation (1981 to 1993)
The first generation of the Dodge RAM Trucks was introduced in 1981. They had a boxy shape and functional design, typical of other trucks of the era. Dodge offered three different truck models. The half-ton trucks were named the Dodge RAM 150, the three-quarter-ton models were known as the Dodge RAM 250, and the one-ton haulers were called the Dodge RAM 350. Three engine options were available on the earliest RAM Trucks. These included a 95-horsepower 3.7L slant six, 140-horsepower 5.2L V8, and a 5.9L V8 engine with 170-horsepower. A 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine became an option in 1981.

Second Generation (1994 to 2002)
Dodge revamped their truck design in the second generation. The trucks now sported a prominent grille and aerodynamic bodies, giving it a bold and attractive look. More interior features and amenities were introduced to enhance the driving experience. There were also changes in how the trucks were named. The half-ton trucks became the Dodge RAM 1500, the three-quarter-ton haulers were called the Dodge RAM 2500, and the one-ton models became the Dodge RAM 3500.

Third Generation (2002 to 2008)
The third generation also brought several significant changes to the RAM Trucks. They received a mild style refresh, gaining a more rounded, aerodynamic body. These trucks also featured a new frame and suspension system, improving their strength and ride quality. A 5.7-liter HEMI V8 was added to the engine lineup.

Fourth Generation (2009 to 2018)
RAM Trucks got a makeover in the fourth generation. They featured a more prominent front grille and aerodynamic profile, giving them a more modern and streamlined look than their predecessors. The interiors were also upgraded with high-end materials and comfort features. The RAM Trucks became its own brand in 2009.

Fifth Generation (2019 – present)
In their fifth generation, RAM Trucks were completely redesigned. These included high-strength steel and aluminum frames, making the trucks lighter and improving fuel efficiency. In 2021, more interior features, safety technologies, and infotainment options were also introduced.
